Post-menopausal women, whether due to age or medical treatments, often suffer from GSM (Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause). This can lead to an increase in urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, pain during sex, reduced sexual enjoyment or libido, vaginal pain, dryness, and more. The discussion of vaginal estrogen should not be taboo, especially for patients without a history of breast or ovarian cancer.
Women with hormone receptor positive breast cancer also experience these symptoms. While topical moisturizers and lubricants are the first line of defense, they only provide temporary relief and do not correct the problem.
A 2023 study by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists found no increased risk of breast cancer recurrence within 5 years in women using vaginal estrogen for genitourinary syndrome of menopause. (Obstet Gynecol 2023;142:660–8) DOI: 10.1097/AOG.0000000000005294.
This study is just one of many demonstrating the safety of vaginal estrogen. So, why should women continue to suffer needlessly? We are here to have this important discussion with you.
